WHAT AWAITS YOU IN CAPE AGULHAS?

Cape Agulhas is a Portuguese Cabo das Agulhas word meaning "Cape of the Needles" given for it’s extremely rocky coastline. It has been made famous because it is the geographic southern tip of the African continent and the beginning of the dividing line between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.

It was feared by sailors owning to the sea being notorious for winter storms and mammoth rogue waves, which can range up to 30 metres (100 ft) high Over the past few hundred years it has been believed that around 150 ships have sunk around Agulhas.

Agulhas is also very well known for the nearby scenic fishing villages of Aniston and Struisbaai as well as the delicious seafood restaurants overlooking the harbour. Here you can watch the fishermen bring in their catch and perhaps even negotiate a price for some fresh fish or mollusc and catch a glimpse of the local Stingray Parrie. Don’t forget to visit the lighthouse.

Cape Agulhas has a spectacular coastline, consisting of a gradually curving coastline with rocky and sand beaches. It boasts 2000 species of plants, including proteas, leucadendrons, watsonias, restios and an abundance of limestone fynbos species.

Cape Agulhas is also a wonderful location for avid birders with both land and sea based birds in abundance. Cape sugarbird, sunbirds, blue crane, flamingos, lanner falcon, African marsh-harrier, martial eagle, African black oystercatcher, chestnut-banded plover, little stint and curlew sandpiper. African fish-eagle and jackal buzzard to name but a few. The Agulhas Plain isn’t most famous for its land animals, but you might spot the Cape grysbok or other small creatures like mongoose, shrews or hares along your walks. Other mammals in the area include porcupine, genet and otter. Marine wildlife includes whales, dolphins and seals.

Cape Agulhas has a warm Mediterranean climate and is consistently mild with an on average 400-600mm of rain per year between May and October. The winter months run from May to September [low season] while the summer runs from October to April [high season]. The summer averages 24C [75.2F] while winter temperatures average 15C [59F]
